The term “bug,” which we frequently hear in the software world, is used to describe software defects and errors. Interestingly, the origin of this term dates back to an intriguing history. The word “bug” was first used by Thomas Edison to describe mechanical malfunctions. Edison used this term in an 1878 letter to Western Union President William Orton while describing an issue in telephone design. In the letter, he wrote: \u201cYou were partly right; I did find a \u2018bug\u2019 in my apparatus, but it was not in the telephone proper. It was of the species \u2018callbellum.\u2019 It seems the bug finds a dwelling place in the call mechanisms of phones.\u201d This letter is widely recognized as one of the earliest recorded examples of using the term “bug” to identify problems in the realm of technology. Edison also used the term in his laboratory notebooks and during the development of his quadruplex telegraph system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 9, 1947, Grace Hopper and her team noticed that the Mark II computer had stopped operating, despite showing no apparent malfunction. When inspecting the system to locate the source of the problem, they discovered a moth trapped inside a relay. This insect had prevented the computer from functioning properly, officially going down in history as the first recorded “bug” in computing. Grace Hopper documented the incident in the system logbook with the famous note: \u201cFirst actual case of bug being found.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Types of Bugs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The types of bugs encountered in software development typically arise from various issues that emerge during the development, execution, or use of the application. Here are the primary types of bugs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logic Errors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Logic errors are defects that go unnoticed during compilation but produce unexpected results while the program is running. Even though the syntax of the code is completely valid, an incorrect condition or algorithm produces faulty outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, a logic error detected in the Global Antipassback configuration\u2014one of the BioAffix access control scenarios\u2014prevented the access control mechanism from functioning properly and acting in line with designated rules. This issue was resolved by integrating the setup more closely with actual field scenarios to improve its efficiency. The BioAffix ecosystem evolves based on client requirements, and this architectural flexibility is one of the system\u2019s most significant capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Runtime Errors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Runtime errors occur while a program is actively executing, causing it to terminate unexpectedly or crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Errors encountered during the installation of BioAffix Management Client serve as an example of this category. During setup, an issue may arise during code obfuscation\/encryption (e.g., using Confuser), leading users to discover missing or corrupted components. To resolve this, the code segment causing the error during encryption is re-processed and fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interface (UI) Errors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Interface errors emerge when there is a mismatch between how software is intended to be used and how users actually interact with the application. These issues can result in broken UI functionality or visual misalignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In BioAffix Management, adding custom fields under the “Staff” tab within the “Users & Visitors” module can occasionally disrupt window formatting, resulting in layout defects. This distortion indicates that the original tab layout is failing to behave as expected and is incompatible with the newly added fields. Such unexpected behaviors directly degrade user experience. Through feedback collected regarding interface issues, these discrepancies are swiftly resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Functional Errors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When software does not operate according to its functional specifications or intended design, it leads to a broad category of functional errors that can stem from multiple causes and impact various system components. These errors can disrupt application workflows, produce unintended results, and negatively affect overall system performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, in the BioAffix Management Client application, when an operator attempts to add a new visitor under the “Visitors” screen within the “Users & Visitors” tab, the system might trigger a “record not affected” warning, or the visitor details may fail to update despite clicking the save button. In such cases, while the operation might visually appear complete, the data is neither processed correctly nor persisted to the database. Resolving this requires reviewing and revising the underlying code, identifying the root cause, and deploying the necessary fix to ensure proper system behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hardware-Dependent Errors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

YHardware-dependent errors arise based on the physical hardware configurations the software runs on. Incompatibilities between code and specific hardware components or device drivers can prevent software from executing properly on certain systems. This limitation impairs user experience and restricts the application’s operability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
